Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2 - Alternative & Post-Purchase Evaluation

Interview 1: When speaking with Brett and analyzing his thought process when it comes to considering other options for this opportunity, a few key elements were taken into consideration. This included cost and effectiveness. He said that he would be willing to pay for the extra experience or learning materials that he needed in order to prepare himself for the professional world. However, he said this depended not eh quality of the outside resources, and if cost of these resources were in his budget.

Interview 2: Michelle spoke a lot about outside opportunity, not associated with the university, that could help her as an alternative to this program. Many businesses offer tutoring to learn more in-depth about the skill that they are studying. These resources have also proven to be very effective when it comes to having a successful testing experience or class grade.

Interview 3: After hearing from Noah, I realized that what matters most to my customers is the easy access to the product balanced with the cost and quality of the service they are purchasing. He spoke about how any purchase is worth while if it is improving your ability to learn, perform or be prepared for your professional life after college.

SUMMARY/CONCLUSION: After my interviews, I've realized that there are alternative to my opportunity, however they can be expensive and not all of them are the highest level of quality necessary to reach success. I think that in the end, my customers will find a way, no matter what the cost, to make sure they are prepared and successful when it comes to entering the "real world" after college. They aren't going to let the broad classes and minimal resources of UF's online classes stop them from being as successful as they can be in life.

  1. I think the process for finding alternative and post purchase evaluation for this kind of opportunity is interesting compared to others because it’s an investment into one’s ability to “stand out from the competition.” Because of that, some people might think that any experience would help them, regardless of the quality. That’s understandable, mostly for younger students who don’t have much experience. As for the easy access discussed in Interview 3, that is probably the same sentiment as most college students. Because students all have different schedules, convenience to access the product on their time is the first step to achieving consumer satisfaction.

  2. Megan,
Unless there is a monopoly in the market, there will always be an alternative. The trick is to find a way to be better than the alternatives. Sometimes it can be a little tweak, one thing that will make you stand out. Maybe it's the price of your solution, quality, content, or customer service

  3. Megan,
Your interviews provided you with a realization which is great. There are always going to be alternatives which is something that an entrepreneur needs to know in order to be spotlighted against competition. I had to do a prototype for my innovation academy class where there was another competitor who had a similar idea but on a much larger scale. My group had the same idea but decided it would be best to have a prototype that would less expensive for customers. We felt that ours stood out the best because it was much cheaper and reusable. One thing that makes an entrepreneur is their attitude. The fact that you feel your opportunity will be much more sought after than the alternatives is very good.

  4. Megan,
It looks like the alternative you find is not exactly beneficial enough to your consumers. It is important to recognize that you might have competition, and it is not always a bad thing! I think that this is something that is somewhat out of control of the student's hands so ultimately they would not go out of their way to spend a lot to avoid the broad classes.

  5. Hello Megan !
I like your article. It is interesting story about figuring out buyer behavior. You did a great interview. I totally agree with Noah that what matters most to my customers is the easy access to the product balanced with the cost and quality of the service they are purchasing. Yes, this is most important thing because when people buy something the most consideration is cost and quality. If there are similar product, people should buy more cheaper one. Thank you for share great article and you did a great job !

  6. Truthfully, I feel that a person cannot buy a specific experience. Maybe this assignment will give you inspiration to sort of re-wire your idea, which is the purpose of the assignment: exposing weaknesses. I agree that it is sometimes hard to find the perfect internship or class, so maybe create a place or product that will help connect people to others that can offer precise experiences. That would be super helpful.

Take me, for example. I am interested in learning more about aquaculture, but that's a broad field. If I could search up a facility that specializes in fish nutrition research and get contact info, that would help me narrow down my choices and get that specific experience.

  7. Wow after listening to these testimonials from your interviews I think your summary really captures the major elements that they presented. I agree with you in that nothing will stop a lot of people here at achieving what they want to achieve in life and so a product would definitely sell well in this identified market.

  9. Megan,

It's awesome that you've found great insights from your interviews. It seems like the interviews you gave were actually very helpful to what you needed to know to make your idea successful. It seems like everyone agreed with your idea of people needing more information about the job field that they are going into. In terms of finding alternatives, I think that if you had interviewed me I would have told you that if there were alternatives I would still choose the choice that was most convenient regardless of price.
Just my two cents, great interviews!

  10. Megan,

I feel like you did an excellent job figuring out your opportunity and finding out how it's not necessarily a good opportunity. People will always have different preferences regarding things like price and product quality, but a good opportunity will encompass all of those factors. Like you said, you just need to find the proper balance or just provide what everyone could possibly want.

  11. Megan,
I think it would be nearly impossible for a school to offer every specific field for a student to study. This is why you have such a wide range of schools. Some specialize in medicine, while others specialize in physics. I believe the responsibility is up to the student to research what school has the specific field that they are trying to enter and then make a choose to attend that school.

  12. Megan,

Great post! Your interviewees gave a lot of insight when it comes to alternatives. We are constantly evolving, so alternatives are always going to be present. It takes talking to outside sources to realize one's product idea flaws. Your service is salient, but I feel as if it would not fit in society's mindset just yet.
